Below is a draft of the trip at the moment. We now have a hotel booked and the price will likely be around $4900 Canadian per person double occupancy. See below for a draft itinerary. Booking should open around March 16, and there will be a VERY short signup deadline because of ticketing policies.

A spectacular programme for an unmissable celebration

Using archive footage of English National Ballet, Dominic Best, who directed BBC documentaries Good Swan, Bad Swan: Dancing Swan Lake and Giselle: Belle of the Ballet will create a special film which will dissolve into live performance on stage.

The programme features extracts from great masterworks which have not been recently performed by the Company, including:

• George Balanchine's Apollo
• John Cranko's Onegin
• Roland Petit's Carmen
• Leonide Massine's Farruca (3-Cornered Hat)
• Christopher Bruce's Swansong
• Ben Stevenson's Three Preludes

These will be performed alongside excerpts of some of the Company's modern productions including:

• Dust by Akram Khan
• Broken Wings by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa
• Playlist (Track 2) by William Forsythe

The gala performances conclude with a nod to English National Ballet's early years, with a performance of one of its signature pieces, Etudes by Harold Lander, first performed by the Company in 1955.

English National Ballet Emerging Dancer Competition Livestream May 7

https://youtu.be/vtwcDYAQ5wc  English National Ballet will live stream this inspiring night of dance from Sadler’s Wells on Tuesday 7 May starting at 7.25pm BST (2.25 pm Eastern Time) Selected by their peers, six of the Company’s most promising dancers perform in front of an eminent panel of expert judges, before one receives the 2019 Emerging Dancer Award. Ahead of the show, watch videos introducing you to the six finalists: Alice Bellini, Emilia Cadorin, Julia Conway, Rentaro Nakaaki, Shale Wagman and Rhys Antoni Yeomans.   Hosted by former Principal of The Royal Ballet Adam Cooper, the evening sees them perform classical pas de deux and contemporary solos. The finalists will first perform a classical pas de deux, followed by a contemporary solo. This year will see Rhys Antoni Yeomans and Emilia Cadorin dance a pas de deux from Coppélia, Shale Wagman and Alice Bellini will perform the Grand Pas Classique, and Rentaro Nakaaki and Julia Conway dance Flames of Paris. Rhys Antoni Yeomans will then dance a solo from William Forsythe’s In The Middle, Somewhat Elevated, while Emilia Cadorin will dance BAM! choreographed by First Soloist Fabian Reimair, who has also composed the music to accompany the piece. Shale Wagman will perform Peculiar Mind choreographed by Nürnberg Ballet dancer Sofie Vervaecke, and Alice Bellini performs Danish choreographer Sebastian Kloborg’s CLAN B. Julia Conway has worked with Rambert dancer Miguel Altunaga to create her solo piece Untitled Code, and Rentaro Nakaaki has worked with choreographer Nuno Campos, who has created Own for Rentaro to perform on the evening. The evening will also see a special performance from last year’s Emerging Dancer Award winner Daniel McCormick, who will perform a pas de deux from Don Quixote with First Artist Francesca Velicu. Emma Portner, described by Dance Spirit as a young choreographer “changing the dance world,” shares highlights from her upcoming Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (HSDC) commission with new music by Devonté Hynes (aka Blood Orange) performed by Third Coast Percussion, and from her duet with Anne Plamondon, commissioned by Fall for Dance North (FFDN), prior to their respective premieres in Chicago and Toronto. Portner will also screen her newest dance film, FEMME DEBOUT commissioned by Fondation Beyeler on the occasion of the foundation’s Bacon—Giacometti exhibition. As part of the program, Portner, Plamondon, and HSDC artistic director Glenn Edgerton will discuss their collaboration in a discussion moderated by FFDN artistic director Ilter Ibrahimof.

Peter Boal, Pacific Northwest Ballet artistic director and a former principal dancer of the New York City Ballet, is joined by dancers from the Pacific Northwest Ballet to discuss and perform male solos by acclaimed choreographer Jerome Robbins on the occasion of Robbins’ 2018 centennial. Among the works performed, Peter Boal will reconstruct a “lost” solo created for him by Jerome Robbins.

In honor of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s 60th anniversary, artistic director Robert Battle, artistic director emerita Judith Jamison, and choreographer Rennie Harris will join in a conversation moderated by author Susan Fales-Hill that spotlights what truly makes the company so special. Alvin Ailey dancers will perform highlights from signature classics and commissioned works, pushing dance into new territory leading up to the company’s New York City Center season.

English National Ballet: Akram Khan’s Giselle at the Harris Theater

British Bangladeshi choreographer Akram Khan, known for masterful works that interweave contemporary dance and Indian kathak, creates a 21st-century Giselle. This classical ballet is reimagined in a stunning new version that illustrates the woes of migrant workers and powerful factory owners. Following an applauded second run at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, the English National Ballet will bring this groundbreaking work to Chicago’s Harris Theater for Music and Dance in 2019 for its American premiere. At the only New York preview of this critically acclaimed ballet, Khan’s first work featuring dancers on pointe, New York Times dance writer Marina Harss moderates a discussion with Khan, Tamara Rojo, artistic director and lead principal dancer of English National Ballet, Patricia Barretto, president and CEO of Harris Theater for Music and Dance, and company dancers. Highlights will be performed by three company dancers and Rojo.

Hailed as a masterpiece of 21st century dance, Akram Khan’s Giselle comes to cinemas in England and Scotland for the first time with English National Ballet Artistic Director, Tamara Rojo, dancing the role of Giselle, one of a community of migrant workers cast out of their jobs in a condemned garment factory.

The classic story of love, betrayal and redemption has been reimagined in this stunning new version, with sets and costumes by Academy-Award winning designer Tim Yip (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), an ‘ominous, gothic’ (The Observer) adaptation of Adolphe Adam’s original score by composer Vincenzo Lamagna and performed by English National Ballet Philharmonic, dramaturgy from Ruth Little and lighting design from Tony Award-winner Mark Henderson.

Filmed live at the Liverpool Empire in October 2017, Akram Khan’s Giselle is directed for the screen by Ross MacGibbon.

Synopsis

Act I
Giselle is one of a community of migrant garment factory workers (the Outcasts). Dispossessed of their jobs by the factory’s closure, and separated by a high wall from their hopes of livelihood and security, the Outcasts function as little more than exotic entertainment for the factory Landlords.
In Act I, the wealthy Albrecht disguises himself as an Outcast in order to visit his lover Giselle. But his presence is noted by Hilarion – Giselle’s would-be lover – a shape-changing ‘fixer’ who trades with and mimics the Landlords for his own and his community’s profit.

Albrecht’s wooing of Giselle is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of the Landlords. Seeing his fiancée Bathilde among them, Albrecht tries to hide. Giselle recognizes the fine dress worn by Bathilde as the product of her own factory labour. The Outcasts dance for the Landlords until Albrecht and Hilarion disturb the Ceremony with their conflict.

Bathilde’s father confronts Albrecht, forcing him to return to Bathilde and to their world. When he submits and returns to Bathilde, Giselle is driven mad with grief. The Landlord gives a command, and the Outcasts encircle Giselle. When the crowd disperses, her lifeless body is revealed. Denying any responsibility, the Landlords retreat beneath the Wall.

Act II
A wrecked, abandoned ‘ghost’ factory is revealed – a place where Giselle and her female co-workers have labored, and many have died. Here Albrecht, grieving for Giselle, confronts and condemns the Landlords.
Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis (ghosts of factory workers who seek revenge for the wrongs done to them in life), enters, driving Albrecht away. She summons Giselle from her lifeless body into the realm of death, to join the company of the remorseless Wilis.

Hilarion enters to mourn at Giselle’s grave. The Wilis surround him, demanding retribution for Giselle’s death, and Hilarion is brutally killed.

Albrecht returns and becomes aware of Giselle’s presence. The lovers are reunited on the threshold between life and death. Breaking the cycle of violence – and defying Myrtha’s command – Giselle forgives Albrecht and releases him into life.

The Wilis depart with Giselle, and Albrecht, now an outcast from his own community, is left alone by the Wall.
