“[Le Parc] finely balances the romantic and erotic in its juxtapositions of formal courtship and sensual abandon.” (The New York Times)

Created for Paris Opera Ballet in 1994 by choreographer Angelin Preljocaj — his first commission for the storied company — Le Parc became an instant success. The contemporary story ballet traces the contours of an imaginary Carte du Tendre; and guided by strange gardeners, the dancers awaken to love, from first encounters to seduction, from timidity to attraction, from resistance to the sweet appeal of abandon in a sublimely soaring pas de deux. The chiseled sets evoke the elegance and refinement of a French style garden while the costumes draw inspiration from the Age of Enlightenment.

Preljocaj, who comes from a contemporary dance background, plays with the subtle balance between the genius of Mozart’s music and the modernity of his choreographic language. Even today, this timeless work continues to explore the codes of love and the way human feelings develop.

Trace the artistic evolution of legendary American choreographer Merce Cunningham over the course of his decades-long career, from his early years as a struggling dancer in postwar New York to his emergence as one of the most influential dance artists worldwide. Weaving together electrifying renditions of Merce’s iconic routines, performed by the last generation of his dancers, this eye-popping cinematic experience explores the late visionary’s philosophies, discoveries and the risks he took on the way to revolutionizing modern dance.
