Cineplex theatres and some Landmark and independent cinemas will once more be showing the Royal Ballet broadcasts in Canada.
Cineplex will also be showing the Bolshoi Ballet. The 2015-16 Cineplex season is as follows:
The Royal Ballet
Romeo and Juliet
Kenneth MacMillan’s famous version of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy set to Prokofiev’s magnificent score returns to open the 2015/16 Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season. This Romeo and Juliet is rich in the swaggering colour of Verona street life and in sword fights and celebrations, but MacMillan’s focus is always on the complex emotions of the young lovers – especially on Juliet as she journeys through the delirious happiness of first love to a shocked, adult perception of her fate. Juliet is one of the most coveted of all ballerina roles, and as MacMillan’s ballet enters its 50th year it resonates as deeply with audiences today as when it was first seen half a century ago.Showtimes

The Bolshoi Ballet
Giselle
The young peasant girl Giselle dies when she learns that the man she loves, Albrecht, has betrayed her. Against her own will, she joins the wilis, vengeful spirits who now turn against Albrecht and condemn him to dance until he dies of exhaustion. This treasure of Romantic ballet is one of the oldest and greatest in classical repertoire, touching upon the great romantic themes: a doomed love affair ending in tragedy, a dive into fantasy and ultimate redemption through the power of love. The Bolshoi is renowned for its intimate and emotionally intense interpretation of this beloved drama.Showtimes

Viscera / Afternoon of a Faun / Tchaikovsky pas de deux / Carmen
Enjoy four short ballets in one evening with this quadruple programme from The Royal Ballet. Carlos Acosta focuses on the dramatic essentials of love, jealousy and revenge in his new production of Carmen. As well as choreographing the production, Acosta will dance the lead role. Liam Scarlett has used Lowell Liebermann’s thrilling Piano Concerto No.1 as the inspiration for his similarly audacious choreography in Viscera. Debussy’s evocative score is the inspiration for Jerome Robbins’s Afternoon of a Faun, which depicts two ballet dancers as absorbed by their own reflections as they are attracted to each other. George Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky pas de deux uses a fragment of music composed for the 1877 production of Swan Lake for an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique.Showtimes

Jewels
This opulent triptych was inspired by Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue, celebrating the cities and dance schools of Paris, New York and St. Petersburg, each bound to its own precious stone. Balanchine built a homage of captivating beauty to the dance schools that had forged his style: Paris, New York, and St Petersburg, each represented by a contrasting jewel: emerald, ruby, and diamond. Starring Olga Smirnova, Semyon Chudin, Vladislav Lantratov, Anna Tikhomirova, Ekaterina Krysanova, and the Bolshoi Corps de Ballet. (JEWELS was recorded live on January 19, 2014)Showtimes

The Nutcracker
Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without The Royal Ballet’s classic production of The Nutcracker. Peter Wright’s enchanting production with its wondrously growing Christmas tree and a rousing battle between the villainous Mouse King and an army of toy soldiers, mines the colour of Tchaikovsky’s score, retaining exquisite surviving fragments of the original Ivanov choreography, including the beautiful pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.Showtimes

The Taming Of The Shrew
Many suitors dream of marrying the lovely and docile Bianca, including Luciento. However her father will not let anyone marry her before her elder sister, the ill-tempered shrew Katharina, is herself married. French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot lands a coup with his adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy tailored specifically to the Bolshoi dancers, and achieves a magnetic two hours of breathtaking, nonstop dance unlike any other, portraying the Bolshoi’s audacity and energy in a completely new way. This new production was staged exclusively for the Bolshoi and cannot be seen anywhere else!Showtimes

Rhapsody / Two Pigeons
This delightful Frederick Ashton double bill opens with his setting of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, using the music’s dark turbulence and brilliance to inspire some of his most thrilling choreography, originally created to showcase the virtuosity of Mikhail Baryshnikov. Two Pigeons is Ashton at his most romantic and features one of the most sublime pas de deux in the repertoire.Showtimes

Spartacus
In ancient Rome, Spartacus, a Thracian king, is turned captive by Crassus with his wife Phrygia. Forced to fight as a gladiator and kill one of his friends, Spartacus plots an unprecedented upheaval. Grigorovich's Spartacus was created at the Bolshoi in 1968 and has since remained the Russian company’s signature ballet. This most spectacular production is an epic tour de force, giving full expression to the virility and strengh for which the Bolshoi’s male dancers are renowned. Principal dancer Mikhail Lobukhin is stunning in the role of the legendary gladiator, along with Svetlana Zakharova as Aegina and Vladislav Lantratov as Crassus.(SPARTACUS was recorded live on October 20, 2013)

Giselle
Giselle is the quintessential Romantic classic, a love affair that begins in the real world and continues beyond the grave. The ballet’s title role also offers one of the great challenges of the ballet repertory, as Giselle transforms from an innocent peasant girl, duped into love, to a forgiving spirit who saves her lover from death. For the ballerina this is a role of two contrasting halves: in Act I she must appear naïve and artless, her dancing alive with an earthy enthusiasm; in Act II she transforms into light and air, her dancing so ethereal as to seem weightless. In Peter Wright’s production, the dual aspect of the ballet is perfectly achieved: the first act dramatized in rich, naturalistic detail and the second with a spectral, moonlit beauty.Showtimes

Frankenstein
Royal Ballet Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett has chosen Mary Shelley’s gothic classic Frankenstein as the basis for his first full-length narrative ballet for the Covent Garden Main Stage. A story of betrayal, curiosity, life, death and, above all, love, it inspires Scarlett to explore the very depths of human nature and our need to find acceptance and a place in the world. For this exciting new ballet Scarlett returns to the music of Lowell Liebermann, from whom he has commissioned a brand new score.Showtimes
