In a recent interview, the incoming director of the Paris Opera Ballet, Benjamin Millepied, had this to say:
"I want to bring in some diversity. In a city as cosmopolitan [as Paris], I don't understand that there is not a single dancer of colour in this large company [the Paris Opera Ballet has about 150 dancers]. How can the audience possibly recognize itself?'
The former New York City Ballet dancer promises an "era of openness and change", with "ballets with contemporary stories and social themes", works "with a modern feel" from Alexeï Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon and Justin Peck, among others.
