Ballet appreciation course in Ottawa Fall 2015

I will be offering an "Introduction to the Ballet Broadcast Season" course at Carleton University this fall.

Week 1 – Star-crossed lovers
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Prokofiev's stirring music have inspired almost every ballet choreographer. We look particularly at the version by Royal Ballet choreographer Kenneth MacMillan.

Week 2 – Sunny Spain and Sleeping Beauties – the St Petersburg version
In Don Quixote, the late 19th-century team of choreographer Marius Petipa and composer Ludwig Minkus filled the stage with fun and virtuosity. Spanish? Not really, but who cares. Later, Petipa teamed up with Tchaikovsky to create a masterpiece that is more than just a fairy tale.

Week 3 – The Two Masters of American Ballet
George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins tower over all other choreographers of ballet in America. Two of their most beautiful pas de deux, Afternoon of a Faun and Tchaikovsky pas de deux, reveal much about their different styles and personalities.

Week 4 – Men Leaping About
The Bolshoi Ballet has long been renowned for its strong male dancing, and this is particularly on display in Spartacus, a dramatic blockbuster set in ancient Rome by the Bolshoi's longtime choreographer Yuri Grigorovich.

Week 5 – Not Swans, but Pigeons
In The Two Pigeons, the master of the warm fuzzies, Frederick Ashton, takes a simple tale of a wayward lover who comes back to his sweetheart and leaves you in tears with a beautiful pas de deux created for a Canadian ballerina.

Week 6 – Mermaids, Marguerite, and the Man from Milwaukee
John Neumeier, the creative genius of the Hamburg Ballet, keeps the art of the story ballet alive and pays homage to the history of ballet. His Lady of the Camellias is one of the most heart-wrenching works in the repertoire.

Fridays, September 18th – October 23rd
1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Location: Room 124, Leeds House Building
Lectures, discussions, film clips
Fee: $130.00 (HST included)
Enrollment capacity: 55 participants

REGISTRATION:
Registration for all lecture series begins on Wednesday, August 5th, 2015 at 9:00 a.m.

Registration details can be found on Carleton's website: carleton.ca/linr/registration/

"Christopher Wheeldon's new three-act version of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale is a triumph. It is contemporary and classical, traditional and modern, narrative and abstract. It feels like something entirely new. It is this profound emotional trajectory that Wheeldon catches so brilliantly. He deals with the complexities of the story with great confidence – each moment is absolutely clear. But the reason that The Winter's Tale makes such a superb ballet is that ... the great arc from abject despair to reconciliation is traced in movement that attains its own poetry. In charting this poignant story, Wheeldon is much assisted by designs by Bob Crowley which bring wonderful, dense colour and fluid, powerful settings to every scene; the action switches from the dark Sicilian court to the wonder of Bohemia, with a great green tree hung with glitter, with fluent beauty." (The Daily Telegraph)

"The linchpin of the staging is Edward Watson's portrayal of Leontes and his descent into a nightmare of jealousy and manic suspicions, which must give the narrative its momentum. Watson is superb, his body contorted by shapes entirely revelatory, his anger and his anguish in Wheeldon's imagery profoundly disquieting, and ever inviting of understanding... The staging is a visual triumph, potent, evocative, eye-delighting." (The Financial Times)

"Christopher Wheeldon's striking new version of this Shakespeare piece crams everything you could want from a ballet into a single evening - comedy, tragedy, romance, drama and some lovely dancing. What's striking is the synthesis of dance, music and designs." (Evening Standard )

"Christopher Wheeldon rises to the challenge of translating Shakespeare into dance, creating one of most fully achieved story ballets to be staged at Covent Garden in years. Wheeldon has used this play to develop the most expressive and inventive dance language we've yet seen from him. ... On a stage dominated by one magically illuminated, decorated tree, this act is pure dance, a seamless fusion of the folksy and the poetic, in which Sarah Lamb and Steven McRae are adorable pastoral lovers, and Valentino Zucchetti is the wittiest of shepherds." BALLET MAKES LIFE BETTER
GET MORE BALLET OUT OF LIFE WITH TOURS EN L'AIR

19 June 2015
Dear Balletomane,
In this newsletter:
      1. Vote for your dream ballet trip(s) in 2016
      2. A bunch o' ballet videos

Full 2016 Tours en l'air season announced
I have added one more trip to the possibilities, a 10-day 20th anniversary extravaganza for Reid Anderson in Stuttgart in July. Tickets for this will be very hard to come by, but I have already had some put on hold for Tours en l'air. Sightseeing trips to the Black Forest, Baden-Baden, Heidelberg, Rothenburg auf der Tauber, Ludwigsburg, and other “must-see” spots in southern Germany would be included. Here's the ballet program:
July 15 - 25, 11 days
Stuttgart
Reid Anderson 20th Anniversary Celebrations
Dancers of the Korean National Ballet, Czech National Ballet, Ballett Zürich, Ballet du Rhin, Augsburg Ballett, Ballett im Revier and Gauthier Dance
Mixed Program
Stuttgart Ballet
Mixed Program (excerpts from Stuttgart Ballet world premieres of the last 20 years)
the second detail (Forsythe), new Goecke, Beethoven's Seventh Symphony (Scholz)
Romeo and Juliet (Cranko)
The Taming of the Shrew (Cranko)
Onegin  (Cranko)
John Cranko School Gala
Stuttgart Ballet Gala

Please “vote” now for any trip you might be interested in and available for.
We are approaching the “elimination round” of the annual Tours en l'air destination popularity competition.
For those of you who are new to the process, this is how it works:
  1. Click here to see the complete list all the trips I have determined are doable and exciting: http://toursenlair.blogspot.ca/p/upcoming-ballet-trips.html
  2. tell me which ones might suit you, even if later you may have to decline. Please list ALL the trips you might go on. I will not interpret this as meaning you will go on all of them! If you would really like to go on a ballet trip next year and Paris-Amsterdam is your first choice, I highly recommend you give a second choice as well, since the Paris-Amsterdam trip is likely to sell out.

I cannot give estimates on costs at this point; to be able to do that I actually have to plan every detail of the trip, reserve hotel rooms, charter buses, etc. etc.
You are not committing yourself to anything; it's just a way for me to eliminate any trips for which people aren't available (since I have no idea when you all are free to travel). No point doing all that planning only to find out that no one, for instance, can go to San Francisco in February anyway! But if you ARE interested in a trip, let me know; insufficient expressed interest will cause it to be removed from the schedule.
Once you're on the list for any given trip, you get priority when booking officially opens. Some of my trips sell out, so you want your name to be in there!
Over 130 people have now enjoyed the exhilarating and unique experience that is a Tours en l'air Ballet Holiday.

    It's your turn in 2015-16!
