New York Premiere of The Winter’s Tale
The National Ballet of Canada at Lincoln Center Festival
January 21, 2016… Artistic Director Karen Kain and Executive Director Barry Hughson of The National Ballet of Canada today announced the company’s return to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City. The National Ballet performs The Winter’s Tale as part of the Lincoln Center Festival, July 28 — 31, 2016. This engagement is the company’s first appearance at the festival and the second tour to Lincoln Center in two years having last performed Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland there in 2014.
The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra, led by Music Director and Principal Conductor David Briskin, performs with the company on this tour. With over 60 members, the orchestra has performed in each of the National Ballet’s seasons since 1951 and has toured with the company extensively through Canada, the U.S. and Europe.
Hailed as “a major artistic achievement” by Toronto Star and “a triumph” by The Telegraph, The Winter’s Tale premiered in London at the Royal Opera House in April 2014 and in Toronto at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in November 2015. It is currently onstage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. from January 19 until January 24, 2016.
Co-produced with The Royal Ballet, The Winter’s Tale is choreographed by the renowned British choreographer and Tony Award-winner Christopher Wheeldon. The production reunites the creative team behind Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with sets and costumes by Bob Crowley, an original score by Joby Talbot and lighting by Natasha Katz. Based on the play by William Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale is a story of loss and redemption and a meditation on love, jealousy and the nature of family.
