Ballet Film Polina opens in USA August 25

Trained from an early age by rigorous, perfectionist Professor Bojinski, Polina is a promising classic dancer. She is just about to join the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet when she discovers contemporary dance. That throws everything into question on a profound level.
Polina leaves it all behind and moves to France to work with famous choreographer Liria Elsaj (Juliette Binoche). Despite her determination and hard work to the point of obsession, Polina just can't seem to break through. So she moves to Antwerp in search of work - and a new life.

Anastasia Shevtsova - Polina

Born in 1995 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Anastasia Shevtsova developed her love for the arts at an early age. She learned to play violin and piano, paint and sing. At the age of 10, she entered the Russian Academy of Ballet, and graduated nine years later. Anastasia has just joined the Mariinsky Theatre of Saint Petersburg, 

Jérémie Bélingard - Karl

Jérémie Bélingard entered the Paris Opera Ballet School in 1987. In 1993, at the age of 18, he joined the Paris Opera Ballet company. He was awarded the title of Coryphée in 1994, Sujet in 1999 and Premier Danseur in 2001. In 1998, he won the Prix du Cercle Carpeaux, awarded once a year to an exceptional dancer of the Paris Opera Ballet company. On March 28, 2007, after his performance in Don Quixote (Rudolf Noureev), he was awarded the title of Etoile. In 2010, he was knighted with the medal for Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture.

Ballet at the Guggenheim Museum New York Fall 2017



The Guggenheim Museum in New York offers the following ballet events as part of its popular "Works and Process" series.

Works & Process Rotunda Project: Daniil Simkin: Falls the Shadow

September 4 and 5, 2017 at 8 pm and 9:30 pm

Commissioned by Works & Process and created by American Ballet Theatre (ABT) principal Daniil Simkin, Falls the Shadow is a new production featuring Simkin, ABT soloist Cassandra Trenary, Hubbard Street dancer Ana Lopez, and Brett Conway; choreography by Alejandro Cerrudo; projection design by Dmitrij Simkin; and costume design by Dior. The performers’ movements will be captured in real time by motion sensors, generating 3-D mapped visuals projected onto the surface of the rotunda to create an immersive experience that merges technology, music, visual art, fashion, and dance.
This 30-minute performance will be viewed from the ramps and requires audience members to stand for the duration of the program.

$40, $35 members and Friends of Works & Process.

For over 75 years, ABT has been home to the most important figures in classical ballet. Join the company for an evening of discussion and dance as highlights of new commissions from the fall 2017 season are performed prior to their premieres.

Tanaquil Le Clercq’s The Ballet Cook Book: A 50th Anniversary Celebration

Sunday, November 5 and Monday, November 6 at 7:30 pm 

In 1967, ballerina Tanaquil Le Clercq published The Ballet Cook Book, her masterful compendium of ballet history, food stories, and recipes from over 90 leading dancers and choreographers of the day, including George Balanchine, Jacques d’Amboise, Melissa Hayden, and Allegra Kent. Celebrating the book’s 50th anniversary, dancers from New York City Ballet perform excerpts from roles originated 
by Ballet Cook Book contributors, and dance legends Jacques d’Amboise and Allegra Kent join food scholar Meryl Rosofsky 
and dancers Jared Angle and Adrian Danchig-Waring in a discussion of Le Clercq’s artistic and culinary legacy.

The Sarasota Ballet: Classical and New Voices

November 19, 2017 

 American Ballet Theatre principal dancer and choreographer Marcelo Gomes, invited by director Iain Webb and executive director Joseph Volpe, recently performed with The Sarasota Ballet in Sir Frederick Ashton’s rarely seen The Two Pigeons. After working with Gomes, Webb commissioned a new choreographic work from him. Exploring classical and new voices, Gomes performs highlights from The Two Pigeons and company dancers perform excerpts from the new commission prior to the premiere in Sarasota. With Webb, Gomes shares insight into his creative process during the development of this new work.

Volunteer for Fall for Dance North

Fall for Dance North (Toronto) is looking for volunteers.

 There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities available at FFDN 2017.  The deadline to apply is August 18, 2017 at 5pm.

Corps Volunteers make up the main body of FFDN volunteers. They work at the Sony Centre on festival evenings and take on a variety of responsibilities. Corps volunteers must commit to working a minimum of one shift, which is typically 2-4 hours. Some responsibilities may include:

​

  • Overseeing poster signing and assembling festival programs
  • Assisting at the festival donor table
  • Acting as a messenger or runner
  • Assisting at the opening night party
  • Greeting festival guests at the Sony Centre



​

Principal Volunteers are a select group of individuals that take on key roles during the Festival. These roles entail greater responsibility and require a larger time commitment. Principal volunteers work more closely with festival artists and have access to better perks. Some principal volunteer roles include:

​

  • Master Class Assistants
  • Company Liaisons
  • Company Manager Assistants   
  • Airport/Hotel Greeters and Artist Transport


 

72-Person Ball Passing Team

​

This year, FFDN is looking for a special group of volunteers to join our 72-Person Ball Passing Team! These volunteers will attend a select number of Ball Passing rehearsals between Sept 11th and 29th at Sony Centre. They will also work closely with performers during the performance days from Oct 4th to 6th. Ball Passing volunteers must be organized, outgoing and not afraid to assume a leadership role.

Are you fluent in French, Mandarin, Cantonese, or German? Would you be interested in working with Festival staff and artists as a translator? Please be sure to indicate your interest on the Volunteer Application Form.

Union Station Volunteers

​

Throughout September and October, FFDN will present unique programming in Union Station’s newly refurbished West Wing. We are putting together a team to assist specifically at these events. If you cannot volunteer during the festival but still want to get involved, consider volunteering with FFDN at Union Station.
