PAUL TAYLOR: CREATIVE DOMAIN

FRI, DEC 11—18

One of the world’s most elusive and respected choreographers, Paul Taylor has been on the cutting edge of modern dance for nearly 60 years. Centered on Taylor’s guiding voice, audiences can see how a new dance gets hammered out to perfection, through sweat and inspiration. From director Kate Geis and award-winning cinematographer Tom Hurwitz, Paul Taylor: Creative Domain is an inside look at a master at work—creating something metaphysical from emotion, inspiration and bodies in action.

THE ROYAL BALLET: FOUR ONE-ACT BALLETS

SUN, DEC 20 - 11:30 AM

Enjoy an incredible diversity of choreography and stage settings with these four short scenes from The Royal Ballet. Carlos Acosta focuses on the dramatic essentials of love, jealousy and revenge in his new production of Carmen. Liam Scarlett has used Lowell Liebermann’s thrilling Piano Concerto No.1 as the inspiration for his similarly audacious choreography in Viscera. Debussy’s evocative score is the inspiration for Jerome Robbins’s Afternoon of a Faun, which depicts two ballet dancers as absorbed by their own reflections as they are attracted to each other. George Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky pas de deux uses a fragment of music composed for the 1877 production of Swan Lake for an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique.

THE ROYAL BALLET: ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

MON, DEC 28 - 11:30 AM

Back by popular demand! Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland captures the magic of Wonderland and the extraordinary characters Alice meets there, including the highly-strung Queen of Hearts, dancing playing cards, a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter, with theatrical magic and inventive choreography.

Performed at the Royal Opera House on December 10, 2014. Includes two 10-minute intermissions.
