Justin Peck's Ballet 422 doc screening in Toronto

The Bloor Cinema in Toronto will be showing the prize-winning documentary Ballet 422, which has been getting rave reviews.
From first rehearsal to world premiere, Ballet 422 takes us backstage at the New York City Ballet (NYCB) as dancer and up-and-coming choreographer Justin Peck crafts a new work. Ballet 422 illuminates the process behind creating a ballet within the ongoing cycle of rehearsals and performances at one of the world’s great ballet companies. Under the artistic direction of Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins, NYCB boasts a roster of more than 90 elite dancers and a repertory of works by many of ballet’s greatest choreographers. For the Company’s 2013 Winter Season Justin Peck is commissioned to create a new ballet. With unprecedented access to an elite world, the film presents an unembellished vérité portrait of the process as Peck collaborates with musicians, lighting designers, costume designers and his fellow dancers to create Paz de la Jolla, NYCB’s 422nd new ballet.

We have a winner

The lucky winner of the contest to attend NYCB "Ballet Essentials" this Saturday has been notified. Thanks to all who entered.

Fascinating article about the music of The Winter's Tale

"Then there are, of course, the issues of who you cast to play these crazy and rare instruments, how you incorporate them into the rehearsal process, how the instruments and players are going to look onstage, whether the instruments are portable enough ..." Composer Joby Talbot talks about some unique challenges in composing the music for Christopher Wheeldon's Winter's Tale in this article (click here).

For info on where you can see the cinema broadcast of the ballet in North America on February 17, 2015, click here.

It is also available on DVD (click here).

The National Ballet of Canada will be performing the ballet in Toronto during their 2015-16 season.
