Documentary about NYCB dancer choreographer Justin Peck premieres April 19

BALLET 422 premieres at 2014 Tribeca Film Festival on April 19th.

Sneak Peek at the Soho Apple Store - Saturday April 5th, 3:00pm

Director Jody Lee Lipes joins a panel with four other TFF directors at the Tribeca Film Festival Sneak Peak, an annual event featuring never-before-seen clips and conversation with directors of the most highly anticipated premieres.

Screening Schedule and Tickets Click HERE to access the Tribeca Film Guide and see the full BALLET 422 screening schedule.

Cinematographer and documentarian Jody Lee Lipes crafts an intimate, fly-on-the-wall documentary offering a rare peek into the highly-guarded world of professional ballet. The film shadows Justin Peck, the 25-year old choreographer of the New York City Ballet, as he undertakes the Herculean task of creating the company’s 422nd original piece while simultaneously fulfilling his role as a Corps de Ballet member. Lipes chronicles Peck’s creative process from its embryonic stages to its highly anticipated premiere, quietly observing as he balances a roster of musicians, designers, and dancers from this famed institution. Ballet 422 is a powerful celebration of the skill and endurance of Peck and his fellow NYCB dancers—as well as those who remain hidden in the wings. -Liza Domnitz

Best of Ballet course this fall

There are still some spots available for my very popular ballet appreciation course this fall in Etobicoke. Only $35 for 8 lectures, an AMAZING deal.  Wednesday mornings, 10 to noon.

BEST OF BALLET

Not sure you like ballet? You will like ballet if you like . . .
Art. Ballet is like a beautiful painting or sculpture – in motion.
Music. Ballet is performed to everything from Bach to Broadway.
Drama. Ballet’s stories, heart-rending or funny, will move you deeply and entertain you.
Sports. Ballet offers some of the most exciting athleticism there is.
Sex. Beautiful people with beautiful bodies – a sensual experience.
Beauty. Ballet transports you out of the everyday into a magical, poetic realm.
Everything you like – all in one package
Ballet: What’s NOT to like?
If your experience of ballet begins and ends with Nutcracker, you will be surprised and elated to discover how rich, varied, exciting, accessible, and downright enjoyable ballet is. Find out what you've been missing.

October 22 – Women in White: French Romantic Ballet (Giselle, La Sylphide)
Nineteenth-century Romanticism and its obsessions – emotion, the supernatural, the individual, an idealized view of women – have left their mark on ballet to this day.
October 29 – Jumping for Joy: Danish Ballet (Napoli, La Sylphide)
Denmark owes its own particularly ebullient style of ballet to its great 19th-century choreographer August Bournonville.
November 5 – Impressing the Tsar: The Grand Imperial Russian Style (The Sleeping Beauty)
When you think “ballet”, you see a regal-looking ballerina in a short tutu performing feats of virtuosity, and you owe that vision to Marius Petipa and his late-19th-century ballets
November 12 – Swans and Sugarplums (Swan Lake, Nutcracker)
The collaboration between Tchaikovsky and the choreographers of the Russian Imperial Court takes ballet to new heights as a serious art form.
November 19 – Seeing the Music and Hearing the Dance (Jewels)
The great 20th-century Russian-American choreographer George Balanchine creates a new, plotless style of “neo-classical” ballet in which the dance serves great music, and reinvents ballet as a vigorous, athletic, North American art form.
November 26 – English Charm (La Fille mal gardee)
Frederick Ashton puts an indelibly English stamp on a French-Italian-Russian art form in ballets that celebrate love and warm the cockles of the viewer’s heart.
December 3 – Freeing the Women to be Women and the Men to be Men (Onegin)
John Cranko liberates ballet from storylines dependent on fairy tales and disembodied spirits by focusing on human dramas.
December 10 – The Dark Night of the Soul (Mayerling, Manon)
The 20th-century British choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan pushes ballet in new directions, exploring its ability, like all great art forms, to portray the darker side of the human condition, in ballets renowned for their heart-wrenching duets.

Bolshoi live broadcasts 2014-15 start with Legend of Love

In today's live broadcast from the Bolshoi of Marco Spada, it was announced that the 2014-15 season of live broadcasts will start on October 26, 2014 with Yuri Grigorovich's Legend of Love. Here is a description from the Oxford Dictionary of Dance:

Legend of Love

(orig. Russ. title Legenda o liubvi)
Ballet in three acts with choreography by Grigorovich, libretto by Nazim Hikmet, music by Arif Melikov, and design by Simon Virsaladze. Premiered 23 Mar. 1961 by the Kirov, Leningrad, with Kolpakova, Moisseyeva, Gribov, and Gridin. It is based on a play by the Turkish writer N. Hikmet and explores the conflict between love and duty through the story of its heroine, Queen Mekhmene-Banu. She sacrifices her beauty to save the life of her ailing sister Shirien, but regrets her action when Shirien falls in love with her own lover, the painter Ferkhad. On her orders, he sacrifices his love for Shirien to go and build a waterway through the Iron Mountain to bring water to his thirsty people. Unusually for its era, the work eschewed the mime-orientated narrative of much Soviet ballet, relying on pure dance to tell the story. It was re-staged for the Bolshoi (by Grigorovich) in 1965 and was frequently performed in E. Europe.

Canadian Guillaume Côté belongs to ballet’s international élite. A principal dancer with the National Ballet of Canada in Toronto, he is also a talented composer and choreographer. Following the artist over a two-year period, Le vertige de l’étoile features him in dazzling performances with The Kings of the Dance, in London in Romeo and Juliet, and in Monterrey in a duet with his wife, principal dancer Heather Ogden. The film also captures his daily life in Toronto, as well as a visit to his family in Lac Saint-Jean. A unique opportunity to discover the world of ballet and contemporary dance through the trajectory of one of its most accomplished artists.

Passion Noureev, La

UNITED STATES / FABRICE HERRAULT / 2013 / COLOR, B & W / 60 MIN / FRENCH S.T. ENGLISH

From the moment of his dramatic leap to freedom at Paris’s Bourget Airport in 1961, Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) was embraced as a ballet idol. On the 20th anniversary of his death, Fabrice Herrault, an eminent New York ballet teacher and film collector, has assembled an impressionistic tribute that shows the artist in some of his early performances through archival footage, much of it previously unseen, revealing “Rudi” at the peak of his powers. As director of the Paris Opera Ballet, Nureyev guided the careers of rising stars, among them Sylvie Guillem and Isabelle Guérin; the latter joined the filmmaker and dance historian Helene Ciolkovitch to share memories of her mentor.

For other ballet film screenings this month in Montreal, broadcast live from the Paris Opera Ballet, please see this post: http://toursenlair.blogspot.de/2014/03/paris-opera-ballet-broadcasts-in.html

Slaughter on Tenth Avenue

This ballet by George Balanchine premiered in 1968 (based on Broadway musical from the 1930s), almost 50 years ago. And yet, we still see the tired old cliche in the media "Ballet is not about tutus and tiaras anymore" as if that were a new thing.
