Vail International Dance Festival 2014


The 2014 Vail International Dance Festival will see American Ballet Theater's Herman Cornejo make his debut in George Balanchine’s “Rubies” alongside New York City Ballet principal Tiler Peck with the Pennsylvania Ballet on the festival's opening night. Cornejo, Peck, and NYCB principal Robert Fairchild will perform with the Martha Graham Dance Company in a reworking of Graham’s 1940 “Letter to the World,” not seen in its entirety since 1988.

Also featured: the return of Wendy Whelan’s “Restless Creature” project; a collaboration between the Taiwanese modern dancer Fang-Yi Sheu and the classical Indian dancer Shantala Shivalingappa; and new works by the Memphis jooker Lil Buck, and the contemporary dance choreographers Brian Brooks and Matthew Neenan.

    In its only performance of the Festival, the Martha Graham Dance Company presents masterpieces by its founder Martha Graham, one of the 20th century's most influential artistic voices. Joined on stage by guest artists, the evening’s program features Errand Into the Maze, Diversion of Angels and the world premiere of The Letter Suite – a new arrangement of the 1940 masterwork Letter to the World. Inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson and not seen in its entirety since 1988, The Letter Suite (working title) will feature guest artists Tiler Peck, Herman Cornejo and Robert Fairchild alongside stars of the Graham Company. The evening closes with Echo, a new work created in 2014 by Andonis Fondiakis which demonstrates how the Martha Graham Dance Company is building on its legacy with new repertory for the 21st century.

"Corpse de ballet" on "Elementary"

The CBS Sherlock Holmes drama (on Global in Canada), starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu has a ballet-themed story this week:

Holmes' latest investigation takes him inside a professional dance company when an up-and-coming ballerina is murdered. Meanwhile, Watson embarks on a solo enquiry to find a homeless veteran when his friend alleges he was abducted,

The National Ballet of Canada will return to The Music Center in Los Angeles with Romeo and Juliet by Alexei Ratmansky, July 10 – 13, 2014. This is the National Ballet’s second engagement at the prestigious Music Center. The company first toured to The Music Center in 2012 with Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
The National Ballet will tour the acclaimed production of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for an expanded six performance run to Canada’s National Arts Centre in Ottawa April 9 – 12, 2015.

The Summer Season features Being and Nothingness by Guillaume Côté, a four-part reflection in dance set to music by Philip Glass, May 30 – June 7, 2015. Being and Nothingness (Part 1) was presented as part of Innovation in 2013 and praised by audiences and critics alike. It is presented with the Canadian premiere of The Tempest by Alexei Ratmansky, an elegant and beautifully condensed evocation of the Shakespeare play, set to music by Sibelius and sets and costumes by Santo Loquasto. The Tempest is a co-production of the National Ballet and American Ballet Theatre.

Future Projects
The company is part of and developing several future projects for upcoming seasons. The Winter’s Tale, a new full-length ballet by the same creative team behind Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, composer Joby Talbot, designer Bob Crowley and lighting designer Natasha Katz, will make its Canadian premiere in the 2015/16 season. The Winter’s Tale is the company’s second co-production with The Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, London and will premiere in London on April 10, 2014.
A new full-length adaptation of the well-known novella Le Petit Prince by ‎Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is currently in development. The first workshop in July 2013 brought together the creative team of choreographer Guillaume Côté, composer Kevin Lau, librettist Adam Gopnik, designer Michael Levine and multi-media director Ben Shrinian. A second workshop is scheduled this spring. Le Petit Prince will make its world premiere in the 2015/16 season.

FREE! historical dance performance by School of Opera Atelier

Students from Opera Atelier’s School of Atelier Ballet present Dance Through Time (a FREE special performance) at 2pm in the Great Hall.
In partnership with the historic St. Lawrence Hall (157 King St. E.), students in period costume perform historical dances ranging from Renaissance and Baroque to 19th Century Waltzes, Tarantellas, and excerpts from the Romantic ballet. The performance is choreographed by School of Atelier Ballet Director and Opera Atelier Founding Co-Artistic Director Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg, and features entertaining and educational commentary from Opera Atelier Founding Co-Artistic Director Marshall Pynkoski.
