Pennsylvania Ballet puts the ballet-haters in their place

Pennsylvania Ballet
A Facebook user recently commented that the Eagles had "played like they were wearing tutus!!!"

Our response:

"With all due respect to the Eagles, let's take a minute to look at what our tutu wearing women have done this month:

By tomorrow afternoon, the ballerinas that wear tutus at Pennsylvania Ballet will have performed The Nutcracker 27 times in 21 days. Some of those women have performed the Snow scene and the Waltz of the Flowers without an understudy or second cast. No 'second string' to come in and spell them when they needed a break. When they have been sick they have come to the theater, put on make up and costume, smiled and performed. When they have felt an injury in the middle of a show there have been no injury timeouts. They have kept smiling, finished their job, bowed, left the stage, and then dealt with what hurts.

Some of these tutu wearers have been tossed into a new position with only a moments notice. That's like a cornerback being told at halftime that they're going to play wide receiver for the second half, but they need to make sure that no one can tell they've never played wide receiver before.

They have done all of this with such artistry and grace that audience after audience has clapped and cheered (no Boo Birds at the Academy) and the Philadelphia Inquirer has said this production looks "better than ever".

So no, the Eagles have not played like they were wearing tutus. If they had, Chip Kelly would still be a head coach and we'd all be looking forward to the playoffs."

Happy New Year!

Blue Ceiling Dance presents dead reckoning

Wednesday, January 13 - Saturday January 16, 2016 @ 8:00 PM
Sunday January 17 @ 2 pm

The Theatre Centre

1115 Queen St. West, Toronto, ON

tickets: $25 general admission, $20 student/senior/CADA/CAEA
Theatre Centre box office phone: 416 538 0988
www.theatrecentre.org

Combining choreography by Blue Ceiling dance artistic director Lucy Rupert and internationally renowned ballet choreographer Peter Quanz in his experimental, contemporary vein, Blue Ceiling’s new production explores the power of the mind to produce what we need in times of great distress.

Inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton’s experience of a disembodied presence guiding him from near death on his disastrous 1914 expedition to Antarctica, dead reckoning also sources the experiences of the artists involved for a work that is utterly personal, geographic and historical.

The choreographers perform with Toronto dance dynamos Elke Schroeder and Sky Fairchild-Waller for a unforgettable romp through images, sensations, stories and exquisite physicality. Three duets flow into each other, each holding onto the residue of the last.

Search for me in the Wasteland choreographed by Peter Quanz, performed by Quanz and Rupert

Recipes for Disaster choreographed by Lucy Rupert, performed by Sky Fairchild-Waller and Elke Schroeder

At this altitude choreographed and performed by Lucy Rupert with animated light.

Blue Ceiling dance has been creating, producing, commissioning and presenting intimate works of dance and dance theatre since 2004. Under the direction of Lucy Rupert, the company aims for virtuosic performances springing from the power of the imagination. Combining historical, personal and contemporary perspectives on the spark of inspiration, Blue Ceiling works weave the myriad voices of all collaborators into each new work, for a unique, embodied performance each time. The company has travelled throughout Ontario and to New York, Montreal and Germany and has received commissions from DanceWorks, Dusk Dances, the Whole Shebang and Dance Ontario.

“Rupert is a choreographer with an immense imagination” (Globe and Mail)

Louis XIV movie Le Roi danse screening in Toronto

  • January 21 at 7:30 pm
  • Spadina Theatre, Alliance Française de Toronto, 24 Spadina Road (just north of Spadina subway station, on the west side of Spadina
  • FREE admission!
Louis XIV, the French Sun King,  has two passions: establishing absolute rule over the realm -after decades of religious/civil wars- by divine right, and artistic brilliancy as a dancer. He starts asserting himself against the entourage of his mother, the regent during his minority, by launching a 'fitting' new, mainly musical display of baroque show. The musical genius Jean-Baptiste Lully, a Florentine upstart of unbridled ambition, quickly gains the king's absolute trust, despite the nationalist and aristocratic opposition to a low-born Italian, and thus turns the normally socially humble post of court composer into a 'ministerial portfolio of culture' of Cabinet rank.

The movie depicts the baroque era of Louis's reign in all its sumptuousness, and recreates some of his most famous dancing roles.

A Ballerina's Tale
In 2013, Misty Copeland was given the lead role in the American Ballet Theatre’s (ABT) production of Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird. She danced beautifully the night of the performance, but offstage it was discovered that she had six fractures in her left shin, leading many to doubt she would dance again. A hit with Doc Soup audiences, A Ballerina’s Tale is an intimate look at Misty during a crucial period in her life, from the triumph of Firebird and subsequent painful recovery to her return to ballet and emergence as a pop sensation. Shining a light on important issues in the world of ballet, including the absence of women of colour and the detrimental focus on skinny bodies, A Ballerina’s Tale is a remarkable story of how great talent and willpower can open doors in a very exclusive world.
