Vespers

World Premiere

Internationally-acclaimed Canadian ballet icon Evelyn Hart joins the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in the world premiere of James Kudelka’s Vespers, a new ballet choreographed to Claudio Monteverdi’s ‘Vespers, 1610’.
Vespers combines dramatic atmospheres with creative classical ballet technique, contemporary styles and perspectives on relationships, nature and the spiritual world.
Claudio Montevardi’s stunning score is performed by a live choir accompanied by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Vespers is alive with vibrant character, colour and texture with all the richness of a renaissance painting. This emotionally powerful ballet features iconic ballerina Evelyn Hart in a role created especially for her.

Win tix for "Margot" film at Hot Docs in Toronto

Margot

Sun, May 7 2:15 PM TIFF Bell Lightbox 4 Buy Tickets

Tours en l'air has a pair of tickets to give away to this screening, courtesy of Hot Docs. To enter the draw,

to toursenlair@gmail.com
Contest closes midnight April 21.

One of Palmer’s great classical portraits, here is a doc brimming with the stuff of fiction— talent, courage, sex and scandal—in the true rise and fall of legendary English ballerina Margot Fonteyn. Naturally there’s superb archival film of Fonteyn, including performances in Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake and Giselle. But Palmer demonstrates an ability to extract new meaning from these selections as he integrates new original scenes, including interviews with fellow dancers, partners and others who knew and loved her. Fonteyn’s scandalous off-stage life was under constant scrutiny. She was once held for questioning in a Panama City prison on suspicion of taking part in a coup attempt. Two years later, at the age of 42, Margot’s electrifying partnership with Russian defector Rudolf Nureyev (then 24) caused even more gossip. The film is ultimately a testament to a true artist, one who tragically descended into obscurity and poverty. Michael McNamara
