MATTHEW GOLDING TO JOIN THE ROYAL BALLET

The Royal Opera House made this announcement today.  Huge congratulations to Matthew!

Kevin O’Hare, Director of The Royal Ballet, announced today that Matthew Golding is to join the Company as a Principal in February 2014. His first performance will be on 27 March dancing alongside Natalia Osipova in The Sleeping Beauty.

Matthew is currently a Principal dancer with Dutch National Ballet. Born in Canada, he trained at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Universal Ballet Academy in Washington D.C. In 2002, he was awarded the Grand Prix from the Youth American Ballet Competition and received a prize scholarship at The Prix de Lausanne to attend The Royal Ballet School. Graduating in 2003, he joined American Ballet Theatre before moving to his current company in 2009.

Matthew first danced as a guest artist with The Royal Ballet, partnering Zenaida Yanowsky in La Bayadére, earlier this year.
Speaking about the appointment, Kevin O’Hare said: “I have very much enjoyed watching Matthew dance over last few years, and in particular, when he made his UK debut with us last Season. I am very pleased he is joining the Company and we look forward to welcoming him next year as the latest addition to our world class roster of Principals.”

Amazing season ticket deal from National Ballet of Canada

The National Ballet of Canada announced today a new kind of subscription which makes ballet very affordable.  It is an interesting concept. For less than  $60 a ticket, you get whatever is the best seat left available in the house as of 5 pm the day before your performance date. This could end up being in the 5th ring, where standard individual ticket prices are $56, but it could equally be in prime orchestra seating, where standard individual ticket prices are $184. In my experience of buying tickets for the National Ballet of Canada, best available seating the day before a performance is usually in the orchestra, so this is an amazing deal. A very interesting initiative to get people to come to the ballet and fill those last-minute empty seats.

Here is the info from the NBOC's website.

New! Premium Rush Subscription
See six ballets for $357 and sit in the best available seat.

New this year, the Premium Rush subscription gives you six ballets for only $357.
Your seat is guaranteed in the best available location!
Your seat could be in the Orchestra, Ring 5 or even the Grand Ring!
Choose a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday evening subscription
and get the best available seat in the Four Seasons Centre.
Only a limited number of Premium Rush subscriptions have been made available
– first come, first served.
See dates and repertoire >
How it works:
  1. Select from a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday evening subscription.
  2. Upon ordering, you will receive an email confirmation including all of
    your performance dates.
  3. One week prior to each performance, you will receive an email
reminder with information on the ballet you are about to see.
  4. At 5:00 pm the day before each performance, you will receive your
tickets (including your seat location) by email.
It’s as simple as that.

NYCB dances After the Rain at dawn Sept 12 on 57th floor of 4 World Trade Center

NEW BEGINNINGS
SUNRISE, SEPTEMBER 12, 2013
New York City Ballet Presents New Beginnings
a Short Film Created on Location at Four World Trade Center
As a Gift to the City of New York City
See New Beginnings at www.YouTube.com/nycballet
On Thursday, September 12, 2013, one day after
the 12th anniversary of 9/11, New York City
Ballet will release New Beginnings, a short film
that captures an extraordinary and moving
performance of Christopher Wheeldon’s After the
Rain filmed at sunrise on the 57th floor terrace
of Four World Trade Center in lower Manhattan.
With One World Trade Center (previously known as
the Freedom Tower) and the iconic New York City
skyline as a backdrop, two NYCB Principal
Dancers, Maria Kowroski and Ask la Cour, perform
an excerpt from Wheeldon’s poignant pas de deux
as dawn signals the beginning of a new day in New York City.
Created as both a testament to the resilience of
the human spirit, and a tribute to the future of
the city that New York City Ballet calls home,
New Beginnings will be released worldwide at
sunrise (6:34 a.m. EST) on Thursday, September 12
on the New York City Ballet YouTube channel at www.YouTube.com/nycballet.

“Like the rest of the world, everyone at New York
City Ballet was deeply affected by the events of
9/11. Now, 12 years later, as a revitalized World
Trade Center site begins to re-emerge, the New
York City Ballet would like to offer this film as
a gift to our great city,” said NYCB Ballet
Master in Chief Peter Martins. “Dance really is a
powerful universal language, and the New York
City Ballet is deeply honored to be able to
present this remarkable and touching performance
of Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain to
people both here in New York, and all across the globe.”

New Beginnings has been directed by Davi Russo,
was developed in collaboration with DDB New York,
and produced by Radical Media.

On September 11, 2001, the New York City Ballet
was on a European tour that had taken the Company
from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Athens, Greece, and
finally to Parma, Italy, where the Company was
scheduled to perform as part of the Verdi
Festival at the Teatro Regio that evening. As
news of the events unfolding at home in New York
began to make its way to the dancers of the New
York City Ballet, the sense of fear and loss
became more and more overwhelming, and Martins
ultimately decided to cancel that evening’s
performance.

“While we had come to Italy to
dance, there were still so many questions about
what was happening in New York, and still so many
family members and friends unaccounted for, that
it was simply not possible to ask the dancers to
perform that evening,” said Martins.

By curtain time, the entire sold-out audience had
arrived at the Teatro Regio, and stood in silence
and mourned with the Company and the rest of the
world as Martins addressed the audience to say
that while the Company could not perform that
evening, New York City Ballet would be back the
next night. “We came here to dance, it is what we
do, but our hearts are breaking and it is simply
not possible for us to perform this evening,”
said Martins from the stage of the theater. “But
we will be back tomorrow, and we will be honored
to perform for all of you then,” he said.
NYCB did perform at the Teatro Regio the
following evening, September 12, 2001, and now 12
years to the day, New York City Ballet offers New
Beginnings, which features an international team
of collaborators, including a director (Russo)
who was born and raised in New York City, a
British choreographer (Wheeldon), an American and
a Danish dancer (Kowroski and la Cour), and a
ballet set to a score by the Estonian composer
Arvo Pärt, which provides a moving backdrop to a
film of profound and powerful beauty.

Royal New Zealand Ballet Giselle Film at TIFF

The Toronto International Film Festival will be screening the Royal New Zealand Ballet's Giselle.
Director Toa Fraser (whose Dean Spanley played the Festival in 2008) has not only captured a remarkable new production, but has added allusions to a fictional parallel offstage love story between the two principal dancers in such a way that both tales — the real and the imagined — are enhanced.
The core of the film is a new staging by Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg of the classic by the Royal New Zealand Ballet, which is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary this year. In the ballet, a peasant girl, Giselle (Gillian Murphy), falls in love with Albrecht (Qi Huan), a nobleman who has concealed his true identity. When Giselle discovers that Albrecht has deceived her — and is engaged to someone else — she dies of a broken heart. For his deception, Albrecht is thrown into the hands of the Wilis, spirits of women jilted by their lovers. Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis (Abigail Boyle), seeks revenge on Albrecht, but a resurrected Giselle intervenes.
Offstage, Fraser's nuanced, fleeting images propose the ways that a real-life love story between the two lead dancers might inform their work in the ballet, and vice versa.
