Alina Cojocaru joins English National Ballet

ENB made the following announcement today:

Alina Cojocaru to Join English National Ballet

Alina Cojocaru, one of the world’s greatest ballerinas, is to join English National Ballet.

Speaking of her new role, Alina Cojocaru said: “I am very excited to be joining English National Ballet next season.  I am attracted by the opportunities the repertoire offers, the combination of the classics and the chance to work with choreographers I really admire. I have always enjoyed dancing and performing in the UK and am delighted that English National Ballet will give me the chance to reach new audiences outside London.  Not shy of challenges, I look forward to what the future might bring. Sharing Tamara's passion for the art form and for artistry, I am excited about what lies ahead."

Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of English National Ballet said: “I am so happy to welcome Alina to the Company.  She is one of the dancers I most admire. Her exquisite technique, dramatic qualities and artistry have been a constant inspiration to many, including me. I know that the dancers in the Company will be thrilled to have an artist of her stature join us and I am sure that we can give Alina the artistic challenges and opportunities she seeks.”

Alina’s debut with English National Ballet will be in the Company’s new restaging of Le Corsaire.  She will dance the role of the heroine Medora on the opening night in Milton Keynes (October 17– the start of the Company’s Autumn tour) Other productions which Alina will appear in include Nutcracker in the Christmas season at the London Coliseum, Lest We Forget, the programme of ballets inspired by the Great War at the Barbican, London, in April 2014 and Romeo & Juliet in-the-round at the Royal Albert Hall in June.

Video: Ballet dancer's day from hell

Former New York City Ballet star Edward Villella talks about his career, and (from about 5:25 on ) about just how physically demanding ballet is.
Wonderful clips from Balanchine's Tarantella, Glinkiana, Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, and Rubies, and Villella recalls a day which would rank as every dancer's nightmare.

Herman Cornejo & Alessandra Ferri on Broadway

Inspired by the classic 1920 novella by controversial French author Colette, Cheri is Martha Clarke’s newest interdisciplinary work, an exciting fusion of theatre, live music, and dance featuring American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Herman Cornejo, prima ballerina assoluta Alessandra Ferri, actor Suzanne Bertish, pianist Sarah Rothenberg, and text by Tina Howe. This tragic story of forbidden love between a young man and an older woman in Belle Époque Paris is a timeless, powerful exploration of sensuality, love, and our preoccupations with youth and age.

Plot summary

The novel is about the separation of Chéri and his lover of six years, the much older Léa de Lonval (as the novel opens he is 25 and she is 49). The two believe their relationship is casual until they are separated by Chéri's marriage at which point they realize they are in love. They spend a miserable six months apart, at which point Chéri appears at Léa's home. They spend the night together and Léa begins to plan their new life together. However, when she learns that Chéri had returned for the moral strength to be a husband, she gives him courage then releases him to return home.

Adaptations

The novel has been adapted to film twice, in 1950 and 2009; and television twice, in 1962 and 1973.
A ballet of Chéri premiered at the Edinburgh Festival in September 1980. The ballet was choreographed by Peter Darrell, while the music was composed by David Earl. The ballet was danced by the Scottish Ballet with the lead roles of Lea and Chéri danced by Patrick Bissell and Galina Samsova. The set was designed by Philip Prowse. This ballet was revived by the Hong Kong Ballet in 1989.
